I am lucky because I found LARGO. I did not study English. One day, I got married. We will go on our honeymoon in a foreign country. I think I want to speak English there. I have been studying at LARGO for 1 year. I’m happy that I can speak English recently.
LARGO is a good space and Pat is a very kind person. He has love for Japan and books and music. And people. I enjoy speaking with Pat. I think English is like magic words, because we can speak with people from around the world!
私はLARGOを見つけて、ラッキーでした。私は英語を勉強しなかったのですが、結婚して新婚旅行に行くことになり、英語を話せるようになりたいと思いました。LARGOに通って1年経ちましたが、最近は英語を少し話せるようになってきて幸せです。
LARGOはすごくいい場所で、パット先生はとても優しい人です。彼は日本と本や音楽、そして人々に愛を持っています。私はパット先生と話すのが楽しいです。私が思うに英語は魔法の言葉だと思います。なぜなら私たちは世界中の人々と話せるようになれるからです！

I’ve been taking lessons at LARGO for one year. I happened to find LARGO’s website when I was looking for a rather small class with a reliable teacher, not one of those major English schools. I took a trial lesson, and I decided to take lessons regularly from the next week. I am an English tutor at a cram school, so I bring lots of questions to ask about very subtle nuances. Pat sensei’s knowledge about structures and particles of speech is so deep that I can learn so much from him. What is the best part about Pat sensei’s lesson is that he always makes his students think like “l can do it! It’s fun! I want to talk more!” Even my 22-year-old son, who was so reluctant to study English conversation, and was kind of forced to try LARGO’s lesson by me, took just one lesson and immediately became a fan of Pat sensei, and now he enjoys his lessons.
Speaking languages, especially foreign ones can subject us to anxiety or nervousness, so it’s really great that Pat sensei always creates an enjoyable atmosphere.
わたしはLARGOに通い始めて一年になります。大手英会話教室ではなくもっと規模の小さく信頼できる先生を探していたところ、ホームページでLARGOを見つけトライアルレッスンを受けたのがきっかけでした。パット先生はまさに探していた理想の先生で、すぐ次の週からプライベートレッスンを受けることにしました。私は英語塾で講師をしていますが、パット先生とのレッスンでは、文法や微妙なニュアンスなどとても細かなことでも疑問に思ったことをなんでも質問しています。文型や品詞など、日本人の為の英文法にとてもお詳しいので本当に勉強になり、自信を持って塾で子供達に教えることができています。そのほかには、英語の小説を読んでわからないところを先生に質問しています。英会話学習に後ろ向きな気の乗らない大学生の息子に「いいから一度受けてみて」と勧めたところ、やはり息子もたちまちパット先生のファンになり喜んでレッスンを受けるようになりました。
パット先生のすごいところは、「あれ？わたし、英語しゃべれてるかも？うれしい！もっと話したい！」と思わせてくれるところです。発話は心の状態に左右されるものなので、リラックスできる雰囲気を作ってくださる先生はとてもありがたいです。

I have been studying English for seven months at LARGO Language School. For my lesson, I talk about everyday things and use some texts from my work. We do the lesson at my pace, of course including daily conversation, but I can also talk about topics that need expert knowledge, so I look forward to going to my lesson every time. The most attractive thing for me is that I can increase my motivation. I tried self study but I have never been able to continue. But now, when I lose my motivation, I take a step back from “studying” and we talk about topics I want to talk about. For example, even if I make a mistake in terms of grammar or vocabulary, what I want to say is understood, so I am not scared of using English anymore. If you want to study English at your pace or continue without giving up, I recommend this school!
LARGO英会話スクールで学び始めて7か月が経ちました。日々の出来事をお話したり、仕事で使う文書の添削などを中心にレッスンをしています。個人にあったレベルでレッスンを進めていただける事や、日常会話はもちろん、仕事の専門知識まで幅広くお話が出来るので、毎回レッスンに行くのが楽しみです。私にとっての一番の魅力は英語学習のモチベーションを高めてくれる所です。独学で英語学習を頑張ってみたものの、なかなか続かずに何度も挫折しました。しかし今では、モチベーションが下がった時には「勉強する」ことから離れ、好きな事での話題で英会話をし、無理なく続けられています。例え間違えた言葉や文法で話しても意味を汲み取ってもらえるので、英語を使う事が怖くなくなりました。自分のペースで英語を学びたい、継続的に英語を学びたい方には特にお勧めの英会話スクールです！

I have learned at LARGO for about 3 years. Sometimes I prepare for the EIKEN exam, sometimes I read books for Reading Club, and sometimes I just sit down and have a chat.
Pat-sensei is a very skillful listener, so I can carry on a conversation even when I can’t speak well. In spite of the Covid-19 pandemic, I always enjoy my lessons by chatting with Pat-sensei in English.
We talk about all sorts of things in our daily lives and things that are on our minds. Now he is the person who knows the most about my family! He does a lot of things to keep me motivated to learn English. I highly recommend him because he tailors his lessons to each individual student!
私は3年ほどラルゴで英語を学んでいます。英検の準備をしたり、リーディングクラブの本を読んだり、ただ座っておしゃべりを楽しんだりと、内容はさまざまです。
パット先生は聞き上手なので、私がうまく英語を話せないときでも会話は弾みます。コロナ禍でも楽しくレッスンできています。
おしゃべりの内容は日々の出来事やそのとき頭に浮かんだことなど。いまやパット先生は私の家族に一番詳しい人と言っても過言ではないほどです！先生はいつもあの手この手で私の英語学習へのモチベーションを上げてくれます。生徒に合わせて教える内容を考えてくれる素晴らしい先生だと思います。おすすめです！

After trying to learn English many times in the past, I failed to improve my English. I was locked, being conscious of how far away from English proficiency I was. But, I happened to need to go on business overseas and I couldn’t help avoiding English any longer. So, I made up my mind to join LARGO.
At that time, it was before Corona-19 spread. Aoi san, who retired LARGO this Spring unfortunately, served something to drink such as coffee, tea, and so on. It was delicious and it made me relax and switch to start the lesson smoothly and naturally.
I often hear that lessons are based on curriculum that each English school prepares by themselves. But, at LARGO, the lesson is not provided this way. How to do the lesson is adjusted to what the learners need or want to study case by case. It is a kind of order made lesson, not ready made.
In my case, there are main two pillars I want to work on. One is for improving my business skills, and the other one is for enjoying English. Therefore, for my business skills, Pat san checks and corrects drafts that I make for a speech, a meeting, and emails. After repeating such exercises, I gained some confidence little by little. Now, I can easily write English for business without anxiety. On the other hand, for my other pillar, first, I tried to read “The Catcher in the Rye” whose Japanese translated version was published by the famous novelist, Haruki Murakami, in 2006. I had already read the Japanese version a few years ago. The world of the original “Catcher”, which I felt for the first time, was slightly different than the translated one that I read before.
Pat san explained about American culture and the background behind this novel at that time, so it helped me to understand more deeply and feel closer to this novel. Pat san’s point view and suggestions also made my view wider than I expected. Especially the last scene in which Holden gradually made up with his little sister, Phoebe, who he had quarreled with, by walking together toward the zoo. The grooving conversation like lapping waves in the sea between them drove them to the climax with a peaceful feeling. I felt the original was more dynamic and I was more impressed than with the translated one.
I often heard that trying to read through an English book that you like is a good way to be better at English, but I failed such trials a few times before I could enjoy it.
At LARGO, through my lessons with Pat san, I achieved my goal I was aiming for, while I’m in my 40s. It was a kind of high hurdle for me. Even as I get older, the experience of overcoming my weak points little by little is trivial, but a valuable joy in my life.
Needless to say, LARGO is very useful for my business skills and it’s also a kind of oasis for my usual days enjoying the English world. For those like me, let’s try to go from boring English to enjoying English at LARGO!
英語は何度もトライしては途中でギブアップを繰り返し苦手意識に凝りかたまっていました。しかし急な海外出張があり、逃げられなくなり、切羽詰まってLARGOに思い切って入会したのがきっかけでした。
当時はコロナ前で飲みものサービスがあり、残念ながらこの春に退社されましたが、運営担当だった葵さんが淹れて下さるコーヒーや飲みものがとても美味しくほっとしながらレッスンが始まったものでした。
英会話スクールでは一般に各スクールが用意したプログラムに沿ったレッスンになると聞きますがLARGOでは、あらかじめ用意されたプログラムではなく、受講者の個別のニーズや希望に応じて柔軟に対応してもらえます。レディメイドではなくオーダーメイドのレッスンです。
私は主に仕事用と趣味の英語の２本柱でレッスンを受けています。仕事用にはスピーチや会議、ビジネスemailで、自分で作成したものをPat先生に直していただいています。おかげで仕事での英文作成時に不安が少なくなってきました。趣味の英語は、まず2006年に著名な村上春樹 が翻訳したキャッチャーインザライの原作に挑戦しました。私はこの翻訳版は数年前に読んでいました。キャッチャーインザライの英語のオリジナルに触れてみると、やはり村上春樹訳で読んでいた日本語翻訳版とは微妙にちがった小説世界でした。
小説の舞台である戦後まだ間もない当時のアメリカ社会の背景や文化を先生が適宜わかりやすく補足してくださるので作品をより身近にそして深く、味わうことができました。またPat先生からの視点や解釈は小説を見る視野を思いがけず広げてくれます。小説の最後、ホールデンが妹のフィービーと衝突するも、歩きながら打ち寄せる波のように会話を繰り返すうちに、だんだん接近してうねりのようになって仲直りしていくクライマックスはオリジナルの方がより強くダイナミックで印象的でした。
よく、英語学習法でまずは好きな読みやすい本から完読するとよいと耳にしてきました。私自身何度かトライしてきたものの、面白さを感じる前にいつもギブアップしていました。
それが先生のサポートではずみがつき、一冊読了という目標を40代こえてようやく飛び越えられました。歳を重ねても少しずつ苦手を克服できる経験は嬉しいものです。
そんなわけでLARGOは仕事にも役立っていますが、英語の面白さに触れられる日常のささやかなオアシスにもなっています｡もし私と似た状況でしたら、退屈な英語から 脱出するためにLARGOに行きましょう。

The thing I like about LARGO the most is that I can decide on how to proceed with studying by myself. Writing, speaking, or listening – I can change the subject that I want to concentrate on the most each time. Of course, Pat advises me on how to improve my English skills.
Basically, Pat and I have a free conversation. Pat knows a lot about the world, so it is so much fun. But sometimes I don’t have enough time to prepare for our conversation because I am busy. In those cases, we often watch an American movie without subtitles on Netflix. It is good for my listening practice and to learn new words. Recently, I have made a little English diary before my lesson and he checks my grammar.
I always enjoy my lessons. It is also a relaxing time for me 🙂
ラルゴのー盤好きな所は、勉強のやり方を自分で決められることです。ライティング、スピーキング、リスニングー最もかの入れてたいものその都度変えることができます。もちろんおあっち先生が上達法をアドバイスもしてくれます。
だいたいいつも私とパット先生は自由に会話します。パットはものしりなのでとても楽しいです。しかし時々忙しくて会話の話題を作れないことがあります。そんな時はしばしば。ネットフリックスでアメリカのドラマを字幕なしで観ます。リスニングの練習と単語の習得にいいです。最近はレッスン前に小作文をつくっていって、パットに文法をチェックしてもらっています。
いつもレッスンは楽しく、私にとってはリラックスの時間でもあります 🙂

I’d love to recommend LARGO Language School to someone like me, who’s shy but wants to improve their conversation skills. It’s been more than 1 year since I started at this school. At the beginning, I just wanted to improve my conversation skills. However, Pat-san kindly told me that improving my writing skills would enrich my conversation skills as well. That was refreshing for me and encouraged me to learn English proactively. Thanks to that advice, I got a new target for learning English. シャイだけど会話の練習がしたい！と個人レッスンだけど授業料もリーズナブルなLARGO Language Schoolさんに通い始めました。授業を続ける中で気づかされたのは、今まであまり意識していなかった文法や単語の重要性です。おかげで今は会話力を上げるためのライティング力を鍛える！という新たな目標ができました。その場で課題を見つけてもらえるので、自分の伸ばすべき点が明確になって私は勉強しやすいです。

My first time encountering Largo was when I found their sign board as I passed by after a business visit. At that time, I was searching for an English school in which I could get a lot of time to speak with a teacher 1 on 1, and also which has flexibility to change the textbook or lesson style aligned with my needs and interests. I thought, “Here is the place where my hope can come true”. My intuition was right. Although it was interrupted by my relocation, I have had lessons with Pat for two years in total.
In his lesson, you can see he is abundant in a wide range of knowledge, especially historical studies, sociology, Japanese customs, and also metal music. Even though I talk about other topics such as Human Resources (my responsibility at work) or business topics, he always gives me helpful suggestions or opinions. Hence, the lesson is extremely practical for improving my business communication in English. Moreover I can maintain my motivation for studying English because I feel comfortable and energized by talking with Pat.
仕事の用事を御茶ノ水周辺で済ませたあとの帰り道で立て看板を見つけたのが、私のLargoとの出会いです。当時私は、1対1で先生とたくさん会話でき、自分のニーズや関心に応じてテキストやレッスンスタイルを合わせられる、そんな柔軟性を持った英会話学校を探していたところでした（大手だと1対多や指定テキスト、かつ高額なので続かないことが目に見えていました）。看板を見つけたとき、「これだ！」と感じてすぐに体験レッスンを申し込みました。予感は当たり、それ以来、転勤で中断期間があったものの、合計2年間Patのレッスンを受講しています。
Patとのレッスンでは、彼の幅広い知識（特に歴史学、社会学、日本の慣習、あとはメタルミュージック）に驚かされてきました。私の専門である人事やビジネスに関するトピックについても、彼は必ず的確なレスポンスをしてくれます。そのため、目的のひとつである”ビジネス英会話力向上”に対して、極めて実用的なレッスンを受講することができています。もちろん、Patとの会話で元気をもらい楽しい時間を過ごせるので、もともと英語は苦手意識が高かったのですが、今ではモチベーションを維持しつつ楽しみながら勉強することができています。

LARGO Language School offers various efficient lessons for each student. Therefore, I often consult with Pat, and then he makes a lesson plan for only me. For example, when I asked how I could improve my reading skills, he recommended only a paperback as a reading text and advised summarizing it and, additionally, discussing it during our lessons. This training was good for learning balanced English skills with reading, writing, and speaking. (Now, I can easily read almost 200 page English books or articles on web sites.)
That is how LARGO offers this kind of lesson plan. Pat understands our English skills well, goals, interests, and moreover he is conversant with history, literature, and movies, which are used as learning materials. Largo is a unique language school where you can improve your English skills, but also learn about something you are interested in in English.
LARGO英会話スクールでは、生徒に合った効果的な方法で指導してくれます。そのためにPatはいつでもレッスンプランの相談に乗ってくれ、私だけのレッスンプランを作ってくれます。例えば、以前リーディングスキルの相談をした時にはペーパーバックを紹介してくれただけでなく、その内容を要約してからさらにその内容について議論するレッスンを提案してくれました。そのトレーニングは読むだけでなく、書く·話すことをバランスよくトレーニングできました。（今では、200ページくらいの洋書やweb-siteの記事は苦もなく読むことができるようになりました。）
このように、自分に合ったプランを作ってもらえるのは、Pat先生が生徒のスキルや興味、目的をよく理解してくれて、さらに、歴史、文学、映画などにも精通しているからです。LARGOは、単に英会話を学ぶだけではなく英語で色々なことが学べる個性的なスクールです。

After 20 years I started studying English at LARGO. When I first started, I had forgotten even “go-went-gone”.
As such, I was worried. But it was ok. My worry disappeared. I don’t like starting from the beginning or the standard way of learning English, so we do our lessons according to my interests. For example we checked my fan letters I wrote to foreign idols, listened to some radio programs by those idols together, and translated some hashtags that I didn’t understand on SNS. In this way, I am able to have fun while studying English. I think even people like me can study at LARGO without worrying.
私はLARGOで20年ぶりに英語の勉強を始めました。当初はGoの過去形や過去分詞も忘れていました。そんな状態だったので少し不安でした。でも、大丈夫でした。すぐに私の心配は解消されました。私は基礎からやっていくのが苦手なので、興味があるところからレッスンしてもらいました。例えば、好きなアイドルへのファンレターを添削してもらったり、ラジオ番組のリスニングを手伝ってもらったり、SNSに投稿された文章やハッシュタグのわからないところを聞いたり等。というわけで、私は楽しみながら英語の学習を続けることが出来ました。私のみたいな人でも、LARGOなら心配いりません!

I have been taking private lessons for more than two years at LARGO. It is great fun for me to talk about various topics such as science, news, social issues, culture, music, history, and so on in a friendly atmosphere. Thanks to Pat’s help, I could also pass EIKEN grade pre-1 this year.
２年以上LARGOでレッスンを受けています。私にとって気さくな雰囲気で科学やニュース、社会問題、文化、音楽、歴史など色々な話題について話すことがとても楽しいです。パット先生のおかげで今年英検準１級を合格ができました。

I started practicing English again in my 70’s. I have studied English many times so far, but I have never continued for a long time. I will have been taking lessons for 2 years soon. I started because I want to speak English abroad. I have never talked to foreigners, but I think I have become able to understand them little by little. The teacher patiently teaches me, even though I have not improved very much. I feel relieved because I can speak in Japanese when I do not understand. Also, it is because of the teacher’s personality that I have continued for a long time. I will do my best until my dream can be realized.
７０代になってまた英語の勉強を始めました。今まで何度も英語を勉強しましたが長続きしませんでした。ラルゴで英語を勉強し始めてもうすぐ2年経ちます。始めた理由は海外で英語を話したいからです。一度も海外の人に話しかけたことはありませんが、少しずつ彼らが何を言っているのか理解できるようになりました。まだ上達していませんが、先生は辛抱強く教えてくれています。分からないところは日本語で訊ねることができるので安心です。先生は楽しい人なので長く続けられています。目標を達成できるまで出来る限り頑張りたいと思います。

It has been almost one year since I started learning English at LARGO. I accidentally found it when I was on my way to my favorite sushi restaurant. At that time, actually, I was wavering between changing my school or not because I had gone to the same English school for more than 10 years, so I was in a rut. I didn’t have any goals for studying English. Therefore, when I picked up Largo’s leaflet, I decided to go there immediately.
I confess, honestly, when I was a student, I was bad at, or rather I hated, English. Why have I come to like English? Absolutely it is because I have become able to communicate with foreigners in English. It began with my trips abroad. When I started my job, the trip abroad boom had come to Japan. Like so many others, I went to foreign countries every year.
Thus my interest was heading in the direction of communicating with local people less and less. Eventually I knocked at an English school’s door, more than 25 years ago. But my passion was decreasing. I thought I had to do something one way or another.
When I took LARGO’s leaflet in my hand, it flashed in my mind that I tried EIKEN. Pat said that he teaches each student in a way to help their goal. His explanation was clear for me. I thought “it’s time to study hard here!”. I tried pre-2 grade six months later. First of all, Pat sends ANKI every week. Ten sentences was enough to remember for me and I was slowly arranging the vocabulary in my brain. Two months later, I tried writing. I was surprised that I’ve gotten TOEIC but there wasn’t writing or speaking. I’ve barely became able to speak, read, and listen, but I can’t write what I want to say or hear. I was really confused. I’m also bad at spelling. Besides that, I couldn’t make sentences requested by the questions. Sometimes, I took more than one hour, but I’ve never given up because Pat always explains it to me kindly and politely. I was looking forward to taking a lesson once a week. The first EIKEN test was in October. I went to the examination site and I was surprised. I was surrounded by school children, but I did it! I paid no attention to those around me. As for the results… I passed! In addition, my score was over grade 2, so I tried grade 2 soon after. I thought I should avoid a pause in studying for EIKEN. I took the exam among high school students. At last, the date of the result announcement came and… I passed! It was so marvelous! I couldn’t imagine that I could get grade 2 when I started studying English.
This was thanks to Pat. He encouraged me. He always said “you should have confidence”. And I can’t forget Aoi. She is indispensable to me, too. She gave some advice that helped me relax. They gave me a goal and helped me achieve it. I deeply appreciate Largo. I will continue to study here. My next challenge is…well, it’s still a secret!
LARGOで英語を学び始めてから一年が経とうとしています。LARGOは私の大好きなお寿司屋さんに行く途中で偶然に見つけました。その時本当は10年以上通っていた英会話スクールをやめようか悩んでいたのです。マンネリ化してしまい何の目標も持っていなかったからです。なのでLARGOのチラシを手にした時に即座にここに来ようと決心しました。
正直に言うと私は学生の頃、英語が苦手と言うよりむしろ嫌いでした。なぜ私が英語を好きになったか？それはもちろん外国の人達と英語でコミュニケーションを取りたかったからです。その思いは海外旅行をするようになってからです。
私が働き始めた頃、日本に海外旅行のブームがやって来ました。私もご多分に洩れず毎年海外へ行くようになりました。そのようにして私の興味は次第に旅先で現地の人達と直接コミュニケーションを取るようになっていきました。そしてついに英会話スクールのドアを叩いたのです。25年以上も前のことです。しかし、私の情熱も減っていき、どうにかしなければならないと思っていたのです。
LARGOのチラシを手にした時、閃いたのです。英検に挑戦しようと。パットは生徒一人一人に目標に添って教えますと言いました。彼の説明はとても分かり易く、”今まさに勉強するときだ”と思いました。その6ヶ月後に英検準2級を受けることにしました。まず初めにパットは毎週”ANKI”の文章を送ってくれました。10のセンテンスは覚えるのに必死でしたが、だんだんと自分自身で組み立てられるようになっていきました。2ヶ月後にはライティングを始めました。TOEICではライティングとスピーキングのテストがなかったので英検にライティングの問題があることに驚きました。少しずつですが話したり、読んだり、聞き取ったりはできていましたが、どのように書けばいいのか分かりませんでした。本当に困惑しましたし。スペリングも苦手でした。何よりも課題に添った文章を作ることに苦労しました。時には1時間以上かかることもありましたが、パットはいつも懇切丁寧に説明してくれました。私は週に一度のレッスンがとても待ち遠しくなっていったのです。1次試験は10月、試験会場に行くとまわりは小学生ばかりで驚きましたが、気にせず無事に終えました。結果は、、見事合格！しかも2級のスコアを上回っていたので続けて2級に挑戦することにしました。立ち止まってはいけないと思ったからです。2級では高校生たちと一緒でした。そしてついに結果発表の日が来ました。結果は、、やった！！とっても驚きです。私が英語の勉強を始めた頃、2級に合格するなんて夢にも思わなかったからです。
パットには本当に感謝しています。彼はいつも”自信を持って”と私を励ましてくれました。葵さんの存在もなくてはならないものでした。彼女の助言で試験に向けてリラックスできました。彼らは私の目標のために本当に力になってくれました。LARGOにとても感謝しています。私はこれからもLARGOで勉強を続けていきます。私の次の目標は、、、まだ秘密です。

In our lesson, I usually talk about what happens in my daily life recently and ask about my work, etc. It almost feels like talking with my friends. It is more practical and understandable for me than to learn with a textbook. Though I had taken a group lesson for a trial at another English school before, I couldn’t speak enough because I’m shy. However, in the case of taking a private lesson, it’s necessary to talk by oneself. The teacher, Pat, is a generous person, so you can talk a lot fearlessly even if you’re not a good speaker of English. You can receive corrections for your compositions, so I feel confident to write English better than before. Although you can study correct grammar by textbooks, it is difficult to know when an expression is natural for a native or not. That’s why it was a very good choice for me to decide on this school. If you can go to Jimbocho or Ochanomizu easily, I recommend you to take a trial lesson!
レッスンでは、最近あったことや、仕事の相談などを話しています。ほとんど、友達と話す感覚です。教科書をなぞるよりも、実践的だし、自分の興味がある話題なので、頭に入ってきやすいです。以前、別の英会話スクールの体験グループレッスンを受けたとき、人見知りをしてしまう私は、あまり発言することができませんでした。しかし、個人のレッスンであれば、自分が話すしかありません。Pat先生は、穏やかな性格の先生なので、英語が下手でも、物怖じせず、たくさん話すことができます。また、書いた英文を添削してもらえるので、ライティングには特に自信がつきました。正しい文法は教科書からでも学べますが、言い回しがネイティブにとって自然かどうか、といった点は独学では難しいところなので、助かっています。自分にとって、この学校を選んだのはとても良い選択でした。神保町や御茶ノ水が通いやすい方は、一度、体験レッスンを受講してみることをおすすめします。

590→875 is my TOEIC record during my time at LARGO. I have been a student since three years ago when Largo opened near my office. My style was quite simple; “I hope to especially learn speaking, but at my own pace”. Pat has taught me appropriately and flexibly with his careful consultation. Sometimes when I request basic conversation logic, he instructs me on how to speak naturally with several phrase lists, and sometimes when I have questions about a YouTube video and bring a note about it, he explains and clarifies the meaning and how to use it. Right now, my class includes basic vocabulary training and essay review, and I talk a lot in the remaining time so my speaking can become more natural. Pat loves Japan and has tons of knowledge, so he usually uses topics related to Japanese culture or music etc.. that helps our understanding very well. Thanks to this, I can keep studying without any stress, and my TOEIC score, which was 590 three years ago, has improved to 875 right now. This suggests that maybe you can receive even more positive effects if you take classes at Largo that focus on TOEIC, because even my style of focusing on speaking helped me a lot. If you are going to learn English at your own pace, why don’t you try a trial lesson as a first step? It must be a great choice. Take it easy.
590→875、私のラルゴでの記録です。3年ほど前、ラルゴが会社近くに開校された時から通っています。「スピーキングに特化して、自分に合ったペースで学びたい」私が英会話に求めることはとてもシンプルでした。そしてこの自分流のレッスンスタイルに講師であるパットは見事に応じてくれました。会話の基礎を身につけたいと言えばフレーズ集を用いて具体的な使い方を提供してもらえ、YouTube等で発見した分からないフレーズ例をノートに書いて持っていけば丁寧に添削してくれます。現在私は、英会話で用いる基本単語·フレーズの学習と英語日記添削を基本メニューとして、残りの時間はフリートークで出来るだけ自然に会話ができる能力を身につけるようにしています。講師であるパットは日本大好き人間で、日本文化や音楽等の話題も交えながら自然な英会話を教えてくれます。お陰様でストレスなく英会話を続けることができ、三年前は590点だったTOEICスコアは現在では875点になりました。スピーキング指導だけでもこれだけ効果があったので、TOEIC対策のレッスンを希望すればもっと効果があると思います。もし自分のペースで確実に英会話を学びたいと思っているのであれば、ぜひ体験レッスン受講をお勧めします。

I always enjoy my class at LARGO because of private lessons. It has been very helpful for me that I can adjust the schedule for our class when I am busy with my job. Everybody says that Pat gives us more of a Japanese-like impression than Japanese people, and I have really been happy that I can sometimes get my feelings across to him. My goal is that I will be able to make a presentation in English about scientific topics concerning my work, so Pat picks a Tedtalk video and we have a conversation while watching the video during our class. His major is Asian history, so it is good practice for me to explain to him scientific phenomena and familiar examples in a simple way. I am also grateful for him that he corrects my writing when I have to send emails overseas for business or when I need to write documents in English. I can experience the difficulties and pleasures regarding the differences of oversea culture based on our communication as well, because Pat explains to me western people’s behavior.
LARGOのクラスは、個人レッスンなのでいつも楽しいです。仕事が忙しいときでも、スケジュールを調整できるのが助かります。誰もが言うように、PATはアメリカ人なのに日本人以上に日本人らしく感じられて、こちらの気持ちが通じるのは本当に不思議です。私の目標は、自分の仕事に関連した科学分野のことを英語でプレゼンテーションできるようになることです。そのためにPATが選んでくれたTEDTALKの内容についてビデオを見ながら議論を進めます。彼は、アジアの歴史が専門なので、彼に科学的な内容や身近な例を分かりやすく英語で説明するのがとても勉強になります。そして、仕事でやりとりする英文の電子メールを添削してもらえるのが、英文を書く時にとても役に立っています。電子メールを教材にして、海外との異文化交流の難しさやおもしろさも体験できます。

I take lessons at LARGO after working in order to speak English regularly. I went to a famous English school previously, but it was not so interesting even though the fees were expensive. That’s why I quit the school and started to take lessons at LARGO. My lessons consist of free talk mainly because I want to enjoy English and talking with Pat. Pat is not only a good English teacher but also a good counselor for me. If you have some trouble at work or school, you can ask Pat for some advice. While traveling around Europe, I felt my English was getting better. Before I started lessons at LARGO, I could not say easy phrases like “The toilet doesn’t flush.”, but I can call hotel front desks now. I strongly recommend LARGO to those who want to arrange lessons by themselves!
定期的に英語に触れるため、仕事終わりに通っています。以前は大手の英会話スクールに通っていたのですが、授業料が高い割に楽しくなかったので、ラルゴに変更してみました。私は楽しく英語を話したいため、フリートークのレッスンにしています。パットは素敵な英語の先生というだけでなく、私にとっていいカウンセラーです。もし、仕事や学校でトラブルが起こったときは、パットにアドバイスを聞けますよ！ヨーロッパの海外旅行中に、自分の英語が上達してきていることを実感しました。ラルゴに通う前は、「トイレが流れないので、部屋まで見に来てほしい」という簡単なフレーズすら出てこなかったのですが、今ではホテルのフロントに電話できるようになりました。授業を自分流にアレンジしたい方にはラルゴを強くお勧めします。

I have studied English at LARGO for about two years. A catalyst that caused me to start learning English here is for starting my own business. I thought that English is really helpful for it. The contents of our lessons are free talk, vocabulary, grammar, and so on, on a one to one basis. Regarding our free talk, Pat corrects me if I say something wrong during our conversation. I study vocabulary using an application. The application can be used anywhere with a smart phone, so it’s very convenient for learning vocabulary. The grammar lesson consists of using a textbook to learn easier. Pat gives me some homework, and then we check it during our lesson. Of course, we usually use English, but as Pat speaks Japanese, if I can’t explain something in English, he helps me by using Japanese. Because of this, it’s always easy to understand his lessons. Also, we can decide the contents of our lesson at that time, so it’s a fruitful time for us. So I’m always excited during our lessons. Anyway, I’m going to continue to study English in the future at LARGO!
私は約２年間ラルゴで英語の勉強をしています。ここで英語の勉強を始めたきっかけは、自分の仕事を始めたいからです。私は英語は本当に自分の仕事に役立つと思いました。レッスンの内容は、基本的に１対１でフリートーク·単語·文法等です。フリートークについて、パットは私が会話の中で間違った英語の文を使うと、正しい事を教えてくれます。単語レッスンは、あるアプリケーションを使います。そのアプリケーションはスマートフォンで何処でも使う事が出来ます。だから単語を学ぶためにとても便利です。そして文法レッスンは、簡単に学ぶためにテキストを使います。パットは宿題を与えてくれて、私たちはそれを次回のレッスンの時に答え合わせをします。勿論、私たちは常に英語を使います。しかしパットは日本語が話せるので、もし私がどうしても英語で説明が出来ないと、彼は日本語で私を助けてくれます。なので、いつもこのレッスンは理解しやすいです。このレッスンでは、私たちがレッスン内容を決める事が出来るので、有意義な時間です。いつもこのレッスンを楽しみにしています。とにかく、私はこれからもラルゴで英語の勉強を続けます。

Although it seems tough to learn English conversation and grammar, if you study at LARGO, that worry will be gone. LARGO does not use required textbooks. Focusing mainly on free conversation with PAT, enjoying conversations is the first step in learning English. So when you visit LARGO, it is good to have just one conversation trigger (if possible in English). It can be a sentence or a word. For example, the question “What music do you like?”, or “What did you do yesterday?”, or “What movies have you watched recently?” or “What are your recommended comics?”. Your conversation will expand because of the topic you provided. Moreover, it will help the conversation to be fun if you like that topic. Just talking about newspapers and magazines with articles of interest and asking about recommended websites will also trigger conversation. I think that it is the charm of LARGO, that you can arrange classes for yourself.
英会話を習うことは大変そうに思えますが、この教室で学ぶと、そんな心配はなくなってしまいます。LARGOでは教科書は使いません。先生との自由な会話が中心となり、会話を楽しむことが英語を学ぶことの第一歩となっています。だから教室を訪ねる時は、ひとつだけ会話のきっかけを持っておくといいです(できれば英語で)。文章でも単語でも構いません。たとえば「どんな音楽が好きですか?」とか「昨日、何をしましたか?」という質問、もしくは「最近観た映画」とか「おすすめのコミック」とか。こちらから話題を出すことで、話が広がっていきます。しかも好きな話題なら会話も楽しくなっていくはずです。興味のある記事の載った新聞や雑誌を持っていったり、webサイトを教えたりするだけでも、話のきっかけになります。自分なりに授業のアレンジができるのが、LARGOの魅力だと思います。

Pat gives me a lot of opportunities and clues based on my aim and interests to improve my English, like introducing English books to me. I started to post some articles in ‘LARGO TIMES’ this year and it is also a good chance for learning. I always take private lessons, but I’m so stimulated because I can share various topics with other students through ‘LARGO TIMES’. Also, Pat and I usually talk about Japan in terms of traveling, annual events, and daily life. He shows his interest in them because he loves Japan. I started to notice the attraction of Japan, which I’ve never thought about seriously, through explaining things to him in English. I realized that learning English conversation is something more than speaking foreign languages.

After retiring, I saw off my energetic mother and husband one after another. When I was wondering how to live my life in the future, I encountered Pat at LARGO by chance. Now I have resumed studying English conversation. I was interrupted in my studies before, but I decided to go to LARGO and study at my own slow pace. And my teacher Pat not only teaches me English very kindly but also always encourages me to live positively.

リタイアしてわずかな間に、元気だった母と夫を相次いで看取り、これからの人生をどうやって生きていこうかと思っていた時、偶然ラルゴでパット先生に出会いました。 今は途切れていた英会話の勉強を再開し、ゆっくり、マイペースで教室に通い、先生からは英語だけでなく、前向きに生きることにも背中を押してもらっています。

“I haven’t studied English before!”, “I can’t understand English!”. These are not a problem. LARGO’s lessons perfectly match the student’s understanding. In my case, I didn’t know my English level because the last time I really studied English was in my junior high school days. In spite of that, Pat taught me politely and his lessons were very easy to understand. Thanks to that, today, I can watch English TV and news while understanding it. Some people say that some foreign English teachers may have problems. For example they can’t speak Japanese, the topics do not match the student, or that there is a feeling of a culture gap…These problems can be reasons to quit taking lessons, but these worries are not necessary at LARGO. Pat can speak Japanese beautifully. Pat likes Japanese culture and customs and more than anything, Pat seems to be more Japanese than Japanese people (Except his looks). So it is very easy to talk to Pat. I think his lessons must be the best. I studied English conversation only, but I can also recommend with confidence his lessons for cram school or for English examination preparation!
「英語の勉強をしたことがない！」、「英語が全くわからない！」問題ありません。LARGOのレッスンは受講生の学習レベルに合わせて行われます。私の場合、中学卒業以降殆ど英語に触れる機会がなかったので自分の英語のレベルすらわかりませんでした。そんな状況にも関わらず、講師のPatは丁寧かつとてもわかりやすい授業をしてくれています。そのおかげで今では英語放送のニュースを聞き取り、理解することができるようになりました。昨今では英語の外国人講師は当たり外れがある、という声も多く聞かれます。講師が日本語が話せなかったり、話題が合わなかったり、ローカルギャップに直面したり···これらの問題は十分にレッスンを途中で辞める要因になり得ます。しかしLARGOにおいてはその心配は必要ないでしょう。Patは日本語に堪能ですし、日本の文化、慣習にも親しみを持っています。何よりPatは日本人よりも日本人らしく、とても話しやすいです。（風貌は日本人ではないですが···）英語のレッスンを受ける場所としてはこれ以上ない場所だと思いますし、私は英会話しか習っていないですが、資格試験の勉強にも自信をもっておススメできるレッスンです。

I have been a student for one year, especially focused on speaking skill. Pat really likes Japan, and knows Japanese culture, music, and stuff like that. It makes his class very easy to understand because he usually gives me instructions with some kind of Japanese topics. If you would like to get English speaking skills in a fun atmosphere, his class must be the best. Take it easy.

I have taken lessons at LARGO after work with my co-worker once a week for about a year. I went to a major English school previously, but I didn’t have enough time to speak freely with teachers there because the lessons had some students and used textbooks. Then, my co-worker introduced me to LARGO and I took a trial lesson. I thought that I could learn and enjoy English at LARGO, therefore, decided to take lessons here. One of my favorite points at LARGO is that lessons are flexible. Major English schools’ time tables tend not to be elastic enough, so I used to miss lessons on the ground of work. Pat can understand Japanese very well. Therefore, Pat understands my points when I can’t say some words in English and he teaches me natural English. I recommend LARGO because you can learn English after work whenever you want.

I’ve been taking his lessons for TOEIC. He teaches difficult points of TOEIC kindly. Also, I enjoy free talk with him, and he checks my journal I write everyday. My journal is very simple, but it’s a little difficult to write in English. I feel my English skills are improving rapidly. Therefore my TOEIC score went up 100 points! I will keep studying a lot! I recommend him!
